New Goals
It's been a few months since I've updated here.
I'll list out a few things I've gotten done.
- Finished Chapter 1 of Subway Creatures
- Started a secret One Shot that I hope to submit places...
- Started working STEPPAS (working title)
I'll provide details for each of them one by one.
Subway Creatures Updates
Yay! I completed chapter 1 of Subway Creatures, and completely uploaded it to Global Comix! I uploaded the pages in batches of 10 each month, ending with the final 10 pages today. It was fun. I need to do a better job promoting it.
I've been doing a lot of thinking regarding what I want Subway Creatures to be. I'm not taking time to really craft out story beats, plot, etc. I'm very much so just going with the flow. I think of the story, jot down an outline of what happens, then thumbnail pages -> move to sketches -> inks -> finishes. During one of my planning sessions, I started thinking of the comic as my "Sandbox", where I improve my drawing skills, and practice my storytelling, paneling, and other skills. But, that comes with it's own implications - see the "What Are My Goals" section of this blog post. But yeah, that's subway creatures! You can read here on Global Comix or here on this site!
Secret One Shot
One of my goals for this year was to create a GOOD one shot - one where I really think about the plot, pacing, paneling, and drawing. I don't think I'll be posting it anywhere until I've tried submitting it places. If it gets rejected, I'll post it. If it doesn't, then the world will see it after it's completion. I'm really excited about it though.
STEPPAS
Okay, this bad boy. I came across some folks on twitter making idle games, that sit at the bottom of your screen, and thought "Hey, I want to try that!" and STEPPAS was born. It's going to be a game focused on counting steps. Each player has a STEPPA, that walks on a treadmill, gaining steps. The steps are tracked on a pedometer, and work as currency. It's very much so an incremental game, like cookie clicker, where the goal is to just keep accumulating the amount of steps your Steppa takes. I think it's a pretty cool concept I want to see through to completion.
While I like the concept a lot, I definitely have lost some steam in regards to working on it. I realized that it's going to be a LOT of work to implement things like an inventory system...and I kinda just...lost interest. In addition to that, I'm realizing the artwork isn't where I want it to be either. But, these are just small stones in the road. I'm going to keep making progress, no matter how small...and will hopefully launch it (or be super close to launch of a demo) by the end of this year. Here's a gif of the work in progress. (Real one will be way better quality.
What are my Goals?
With the completion of uploading all of chapter 1 of Subway Creatures, I found myself in an interesting spot (again). Do I promote this, and try to gain a readership? Do I even want a readership? Why am I making these things? If Subway Creatures is a "Sandbox" comic, why would I try to gain a readership for it? Am I focusing on the right things?"
All are valid questions, and being honest, I don't have the answers. What I do know, is that to maybe limit the questions I'm asking, and focus in on the work I want to get done, I can make goals. The goals will be focused on things I have control over - so nothing about viewership/readership, or anything like that...just me getting stuff done.
- Keep going with Subway Creatures Chapters (I still want to make a full volume which is ~200 pages)
- Finish the Secret One Shot and send it places
- Get a MVP of STEPPAS done by end of the year
I can talk about these things on social media, but the focus won't be to get followers or readers from it... just talking about progress. Hopefully having these goals will alleviate those "lack of progress" feelings I've been getting, due to not many people looking at my work. I like making stuff - and that should be the focus...not getting people to look at my stuff.
Until next time
I say this a lot, but I want to be more consistent with my blog posts here. This can also be helpful in combating those feelings I mentioned earlier. Next update will strictly be artwork and gamedev work.
Stay creative!
